The development of Irish mobile market has been interrupted by global financial crisis, but the industry still shows bright prospects for the future. Eircom, Irish incumbent in fixed-line telephony, was to be divided into several subsidiaries in 2008, but due to the fact that the parent company was affected by the crisis, the separation had to be postponed. Eircom is a monopoly in Irish landline telephony sector, holding nearly 80% of market share. Next to it is BT Ireland, which is also an ISP, providing broadband services. However, BT concentrates most of its effort on the fixed-line telephony business. Then comes Smart Telecom that has taken over a part of Eircom's subscriber base, but has lost some of it in the first years of its establishment. However, mobile market can be still characterized as advanced, with all contemporary technologies in hand. The currently used technology is GSM, and the frequency implemented is up to 1800 MHz, with 3G being successfully deployed across the country's territory. 3G is promoted by most mobile operators, including O2 and 3 Ireland.

Mobile operators in Ireland include Vodafone, O2, Tesco Mobile, Meteor and 3 Ireland. Vodafone is the current leader, with 43% of market share, but researchers predict its popularity to decline in favor of Meteor and O2. 3 Ireland is a relatively young mobile operator implementing 3G technologies, and Tesco Mobile cooperates with O2 in providing its services to customers. The companies use both pay-as-you-go and postpaid ways of taking fees from the customers.

However, there is still much to be done in Ireland in terms of Internet access, as it's considered to be lagging behind the EU standards. Broadband access is costly and network penetration is irregular, especially in rural areas. Eircom is the incumbent provider in the area, but its monopoly here is limited by alternative ISPs, and the market share currently comprises less than 50%. Popular ISPs in Ireland are BT Ireland, Digiweb, Smart Telecom, and others. ADSL is a popular technology applied for serving customers, but mobile broadband is becoming more and more popular. Modern tendencies, like FttH, are also being deployed. Broadband market development has been partly interrupted by the crisis, but due to the fact that much attention is paid to the sector, primarily by the government, the situation won't remain stagnant.
